Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha (GDSS)
All Night Sangeet Mahotsav
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi graced the inauguration of the
The Sabha takes pride in pioneering the concept of All-Night Music Mehfils, a rare cultural offering in South India.
This grand annual event features internationally acclaimed musicians and has grown significantly since its inception in 1982, which began with just 300 attendees. Today, it draws over 3,000 music lovers who gather to experience an entire night of both Hindustani and Carnatic classical performances—an exceptional tradition that sets the Sabha apart.
Malhar Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Mahotsav
Malhar – A Musical Tribute
The Sabha organizes the annual Malhar music festival in honor of Keertana Kesari Malhar Rao Torvi, the father and first guru of Pt. Vinayak Torvi. Held during the monsoon season, the festival features artists performing Malhar Prakar raagas in celebration of Varsha Ritu (the rainy season).
In 2011, following the passing of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi—guru of Pt. Vinayak Torvi—the Sabha dedicated the festival to his memory. As Raag Malhar was one of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi’s most cherished and frequently performed raagas, the event has since been renamed and celebrated as the Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Mahotsav – A Guru Smaran.

With a strong social commitment, the Sabha extends:
Financial assistance to needy and ailing musicians

Sangeet Yatra – A Historic Musical Journey
As part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2008, the Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha embarked on a pioneering initiative—Sangeet Yatra. After 25 years of a dedicated musical journey, the Sabha took its mission beyond the boundaries of its hometown, spreading the musical legacy of the great maestro Gururao Deshpande across India.
The Yatra featured a series of music conferences held in ten major cultural hubs—Hubli, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Pune, Sirsi, Delhi, Mangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga, and Mumbai. These events saw performances by both senior and emerging maestros of Indian classical music.
During the Yatra, the Sabha also honoured celebrated musicians and musicologists for their invaluable contributions to the field of classical music.
Organising concerts outside its home base was a bold and challenging task, yet the Sabha takes pride in being the first to undertake such a pan-India classical music tour. The overwhelming appreciation from artists, local organizers, and music lovers alike made the Yatra a resounding success.
The driving force behind this ambitious endeavor was none other than Pt. Vinayak Torvi, the Managing Trustee of the Sabha, whose vision and leadership played a pivotal role in making Sangeet Yatra a landmark event in the history of Indian classical music.
Institution of National-Level Award – Guru Gandharv
To honour exceptional contributions to Indian classical music, the Sabha established a prestigious national award—the Gururao Deshpande Rashtriya Sangeet Puraskar, conferred with the distinguished title “Guru Gandharv.”
This annual award is presented to a renowned musician in recognition of their extraordinary dedication and impact on the field of music. It includes a cash prize of ₹25,000, a citation, a shawl, and other tokens of respect.
The award ceremony is a highlight of the All-Night Music Mehfil, underscoring the Sabha’s enduring commitment to celebrating musical excellence.

A New Venture by Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha
For over four decades, Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha has been a beacon of Indian classical music, especially in popularizing Hindustani music in South India. Founded in 1982 by Pt. Vinayak Torvi, a renowned Hindustani vocalist and dedicated disciple of Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande, the Sabha began with a revolutionary idea: All Night Music Mehfils—a concept then unheard of in Bangalore. These all-night, free-to-public concerts introduced thousands to the beauty of Hindustani classical music, transforming Bangalore into a center for both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions.
From these beginnings, the Sabha grew into a vibrant platform, organizing major music festivals like Malhar-Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Mahotsav, Dharwad Festival, and Youth Festivals. Through workshops, monthly baithaks, and guided sessions by Pt. Torvi, it nurtures young talent and supports upcoming artists. The Sabha also extends aid to financially struggling musicians and students, reaffirming its social commitment.
In 2007, during its Silver Jubilee, the Sabha launched Sangeet Yatra—a bold national concert series across ten cities including Pune, Delhi, and Mumbai, celebrating Indian classical music and honoring legendary artists. The same year, it instituted the Guru Gandharv – Gururao Deshpande Rashtriya Sangeet Puraskar, a national award for lifetime contribution to music.
Grama Sangeet Yatra – Music Returns to Its Roots
Inspired by the belief that India lives in its villages, Pt. Torvi launched Grama Sangeet Yatra, an ongoing movement to bring classical music to rural India. Recognizing the deep folk roots of classical music, Pt. Torvi and his team began touring villages across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala from 2013 onwards. These free concerts introduced classical music to many villagers for the very first time, drawing crowds from surrounding areas—often more than 500 people.
The response was overwhelming. Villagers expressed a deep appreciation and even requested more raga-based performances over lighter genres. Pt. Torvi described the experience as “deeply humbling,” stating that it wasn’t just a concert tour but a cultural exchange. The warmth, simplicity, and hospitality of the villagers reminded the artists of the soul of India—one rooted in tradition, community, and heartfelt appreciation.
So far, concerts have been held in over 30 villages including Somapura, Hosanagara, Kolagibisu, Kurundwad, Kasaragod, Phaltan, and Dharwad, with more added each year. These events have rekindled the bond between rural India and its musical heritage, nurturing hidden talent and bringing joy to remote communities.
As Pt. Torvi beautifully sums up: “Let the village shine, the country will follow.”
Agriculture sustains life; music sustains the soul.
PANDIT VINAYAK TORVI MUSIC FOUNDATION
One of Pandit Vinayak Torvi Music Foundation’s key initiatives is EFMS (Every Fortnight Music Session)—a unique format where students present newly learnt raagas with live accompaniment. These sessions offer real-time feedback from Torvi ji, helping students refine technical elements like Alaap, Taans, Layakari, and more.
EFMS recreates the spirit of the Gurukul system in a modern setting, benefiting both performers and listeners. Through regular concerts, lecture-demonstrations, and mentorship, the Foundation continues to shape the next generation of classical musicians.
Wednesday Sangeet Baithak
The Wednesday Sangeet Baithak, led by Pt. Vinayak Torvi, is a focused session for performing students to deepen their understanding of raagas and performance techniques.
Each baithak explores key aspects like:
Raagas with similar or twin notes
Poorvanga–Uttaranga structure, Lay & Taal
Gharana gayaki styles and voice culture
Laykari techniques and note treatment
Detailed analysis of raag families (e.g., Kanada, Malhar, Kauns)
Through lecture-demonstrations and live examples, Torvi ji imparts practical insights that sharpen both knowledge and performance.
Maneya Angaladalli Sangeet Sudhe MASS
Maneya Angaladalli Sangeet Sudhe is a unique monthly baithak introduced by the Foundation in October 2023. Hosted by students in their homes, it offers a platform for two performers each month to present their art in an intimate setting.
This initiative:
Encourages organizational and performance skills
Cultivates Sangeet Samskara in homes and communities
Spreads awareness of classical music among connoisseurs and local audiences
A step towards preserving tradition while nurturing young talent.
